Über den Stockholmer Professor Hans Rosling, der mit sei­nen spek­ta­ku­lä­ren Vorträgen zu Weltgesundheit gro­ßes Aufsehen erregte, hab ich vori­gen Dezember einen Beitrag geschrie­ben. Wie VentureBeat berich­tet, hat nun Google Gapminder, die Firma des Vortragenden, gekauft.

Wie wenige Didaktiker ver­steht es der Schwede, seine auf sta­tis­ti­schen Daten beru­hen­den Thesen auf fas­zi­nie­rende Weise zu visua­li­sie­ren. Die Technologien und Tools dafür lie­fert das eigens dafür gegrün­dete Non-Profit Unternehmen Gapminder. Wie auf Hebig.com zu lesen, ver­dient Rosling aller­dings kei­nen Cent am Verkauf der Non-Profit Organisation:

Loic also invi­ted Rosling to speak at the LeWeb3 con­fe­rence in Paris where I was so for­t­u­nate to see him pre­sent live. At the recent TED07 he even swal­lo­wed a sword on stage; I guess that impres­sed the Google foun­ders who were also pre­sent at the con­fe­rence. Note that Rosling didn’t cash in with this tran­sac­tion as Gapminder (the soft­ware) is deve­l­o­ped by a non-profit foundation.

The Local hat wei­tere Details — aller­dings geht aus der Berichterstattung nicht klar her­vor, was Google mit der Trendalyzer Software denn nun kon­kret vor hat:

“It is a cha­rity that has sold the pro­gramme so I haven’t had any money,” said Hans Rosling. “It’s not an ope­ra­ting busi­ness that was sold, just the soft­ware and a web site. Although I would gladly accept that kind of money,” he added, per­haps thin­king of fel­low Swede Niklas Zennström , who sold Skype to eBay for 4.1 bil­lion dol­lars.

Until now, nobody has thought of collec­ting all the infor­ma­tion in the same place. That should be pos­si­ble with Trendalyzer, which will be able to pre­sent that quan­tity of data in a clear way as well as giving the user the abi­lity to com­pare many dif­fe­rent kinds of information.

Ob Google an eine Verwendung im Kontext sei­nes Analytics-Tools plant oder ganz andere Dinge plant, steht also in den Sternen. Trendalyzer wurde vor­wie­gend mit öffent­li­chen Mitteln und Förderungen ent­wi­ckelt — schade, dass die Software nicht als Public Domain ver­öf­fent­lich wurde.
